leaf detailSecond Lieutenant Cristóbal de Sologurenleaf right detail

Cristobal de Sologuren was an up-and-coming young infantry officer aboard the Nuestra Señora de Atocha. He had bright prospects ahead of him. Before serving on the Atocha, he had been lieutenant to General Juan de Vega Bazan, a Knight of Santiago, who later became President of Panama.

He came from a successful family, natives of Aulestía (Biscay) Spain. His parents, don Martin de Sologuren and Ana Pérez de Arranguiz, had three other sons, Juan, Martin, and Francisco.1 His brother Juan had been appointed royal accountant of Santa Fe de Bogotá in 1616, a powerful position he would hold for more than 30 years.2

Unfortunately, Cristobal perished with his ship.
